Letter of Motivation

1. Preference: Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (Norges Handelshøyskole (NHH))

The NHH, founded in 1936, is with more than 3000 students and 400 employee one of the most important and leading Norwegian University. Despite to their size, it is also for Norwegian standards a small university, the NHH cultivate a strong international profile, and cooperation with more than 130 universities in over 30 countries verifies this impressively.
Thanks to this international flair it is possible to choose from a large amount of courses, bachelor-courses as well as master-courses.
As a result of this, I would be able to develop my skills and knowledge about microeconomic theory and appliance. I would be glad about doing it in Norway.
This is the main motivation for my choice of the NHH as my favourite University.
Particularly with regard to the kind of examination, it is very interesting to see the different arrangements:
While a few courses completes with a normal written exam, some courses include “mid-terms” as well as weekly assignments. In a couple of courses it is necessary to develop a semester paper in group work at the end of the year.
Considering that standards an intensive discussion about the topics of the course is guaranteed as well as a close contact to native and international students. Because of the small numbers of students the university radiates an atmosphere of special calmness and peacefulness, as I can see from former students and their reports.
Moreover other important arguments are the town Bergen and the country Norway as well:
Although Bergen experiences plentiful rainfall, the unique Norwegian landscape and the impressive natural harbour of Bergen can compensate it in a great way.
Because of the great transport connection to the environs and to Oslo, determined by the airport and the Norwegian “mountain railway”, it is easy to travel through the whole country and nation.
Taken as a whole I would be glad to get the chance to become acquainted with the Norwegian people, which are known well as open-hearted and communicative, but also as motivated and hard working. In conjunction with an impressive university, like the NHH is, it would be a formative time in my studies.

2. Preference: University of Nottingham

My second preference is the University of Nottingham. The University is often described as prime alternative to the famous universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Due to this fact the university is popular with applicant for a university place.
The University owes the good reputation to the great research and teaching, but also to the fact that the Alumni are favoured by many companies, which indicates a high practical relevance in the teaching.
Like the NHH before, the University of Nottingham has pronounced an international profile, more than 4000 exchange-students shows that in great way.
Considering these facts the university featured a brilliant environment for communicative and motivated work during the semester with a close contact to native and international students. Moreover the “Notts” convince me with a great amount of courses, which afford a well-balanced choice with a focus point on microeconomic theory and appliance.
Another advantage of an English country would be the intensive reference to the English language, which is of utmost importance for teaching and research.
The central layers of Nottingham, which shelter the oldest pub of England, afford a journey to the Sherwood Forest as well as a trip through the whole United Kingdom.

3. Preference: Cardiff Business School

My third preference is the Cardiff Business School, which is a department of the greatest and leading research University of Wales.
More than 30.000 students are enrolled at the University of Cardiff, about 2.600 at the Cardiff Business School.
Because of the leading research position, the University is able to offer a large amount of courses to choose. So it is possible to configure an individual semester program with a Specialty in microeconomics.
Indeed not so many students visited Cardiff for an exchange year before, but the few, who does, draw a friendly and interesting picture of the Business School.
Great benefits for me are the extra-curricular activities: especially sports and culture are in the focus and allow fast contact to fellow students.
In general there are similar arguments to choose the Cardiff Business School as to choose the University of Nottingham:
A big advantage is the reference to the English language as well as the closeness to London and the other important City of the Kingdom.
In general it would be a personal gain for me to spend a semester at a British university and a one-off change from a personal and academic point of view.
