Soo, das ist mal ein wunderbar auf meinem Mist gewachsener Englischer Text. Wär nett wenn jemand bis Donnerstag die Zeit fände ihn sich einmal durchzuschauen. Danke schonmal im Voraus!
WorkhousesThere always were poor people, from the beginnings of humanity until now. Today we want to take a look at the Victorian Age which lasted from June 1837 until Queen Victoria's death in 1901. The “places” for poor people in that time were the streets, prison and in the first instance workhouses. People who had to go there were so on poor, old and ill ones, who couldn't support themselves anymore. To avoid misunderstandings: Workhouses were no prisons, people went there – more or less- voluntarily.
In the workhouse there was a strict life. One's bed and uniform were the only possessions. People were bathed exactly once a week. As regards the daily routine, you had to get up at 6am in the morning, then you had breakfast, after that you had to work from 7 until 12am. Then you had lunch, had to work from 1 until 6pm again, ate dinner at 7o'clock pm and had to sleep at 'clock pm. Concerning food there only was bread and porridge for breakfast, and for the other meals you could eat soup, bread and very seldom cheese, potatoes and meat. The jobs there were all the jobs you need for running the workhouse like cookers, shoemakers and so on. There also were lots of rules and punishment for breaking them. People could leave if they wanted to, but the most didn't have any place where they could go. The situation got better from 1870 onwards when books, toys and stuff like that came to the workhouses. Finally a very important point: Workhouses were abolished in 1930. |
