ü Today we are talking about advocacy groups and global warming Christopher Frey from WWF and John Miller from Greenpeace.
Welcome to our interview, Mr Frey and Mr. Miller.

û Good afternoon, Mrs X.

J Good afternoon, Mrs X.

ü My first question is: What is an advocacy group?

û An advocacy group is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation. That means that such organisations are independent of government.

ü Where do you get the money from you need?

J We depend on charitable donations and voluntary services.

ü Mr. Miller, What are the main goals of Greenpeace?

J Our goals are the protection of endangered whales and seals, the end of nuclear weapons testing and a stop to the dumping of chemical and radioactive wastes at sea.

ü How is your tactic to meet your aims?

J Our primary tactic has been direct and we have had non-violent actions.

ü What do you think about global warming?

J I think that every human is responsible for global warming because there is not any man or woman who does not do something which add to global warming. For instance, many people does not use environmentally-friendly cars because they want to have big, loud and fast cars or nowadays there are a lot of households which still use fossil fuels like oil, coal, gas for heating.

ü Thank you Mr. Miller. What about you Mr. Frey. What is your opinion concerning global warming? Do you think the same like Mr. Miller?

û Partly, I think that a lot of people especially the older one, do not now how harmful oil, coal or gas are. There should be more information days for these people.

ü You think that people should use more alternative sources of energy?

û Yes, of course.

ü However, you now that often it is a very high investment to adapt old heating installations or buy completely now one.

û Yes, I know. However, it would be a long-term investment because when you use alternative sources of energy you safe also a lot of money. It is true that the first investment to have the correct systems to use alternative energy is high. I think that the state have to offers financial support. For instance, every household, which does not use fossil fuels for heating, get some extra money every month or something in this way.

ü What can advocate groups do to stop or slow down global warming?

û The only way we can help is to inform the people and tell them the long-term consequences.

ü What are the long-term consequences?

û The signs or long-term consequences are that environmental disasters will occur more frequent and stronger than in the last years.
Storms, blazes, hurricanes and floods will come more quickly.
There are also after effects like the rise in the sea levels and as a consequence large parts of costal Bangladesh or Florida will be swallowed.

ü That sounds horrible. Furthermore I heard that also our climate will change. What would be different according to our current climate and why would this change happen?

û Normally our oceans are warm and the Golf stream influences with its warm water the European weather so we have a mild climate in Europe. Because of global warming our atmospheric temperature is rising and as a consequence of this rise the poles are melting. Now the cold water of the poles will make the warm water of the oceans colder. Therefore the Golf stream brings cold water to north Europe and the weather will change. It will get colder.

ü Thank you for the interesting interview, Mr Frey and Mr. Miller. Good-bye.

ü Good-bye, Mrs X.

J Good afternoon, Mrs X.

J Good afternoon, Mrs X.

ü My first question is: What is an advocacy group?

û An advocacy group is a non-governmental and non-profit-oriented organisation. That means that such organisations are independent of any government.

ü So how do you raise the money needed to maintain such an organisation?

J We depend on charitable donations and voluntary services.

ü Mr. Miller, What are the main goals of Greenpeace?

J Our goals include(or are they limited to these 3 aims?) the protection of endangered whales and seals, the end of nuclear-tests and to stop the dumping of chemical and radioactive waste into the sea.

ü What are your plans to achieve these aims?

J Our primary tactic has been direct and we have had non-violent actions.(Und was genau sind nun seine pläne? was machen sie denn nun? Und was meint er mit "has been direct"?!)

ü What do you think about global warming?

J I think that every human is responsible for global warming because there is not a single man or woman who does not contribute to global warming at all. For instance, many people do not use environmentally friendly cars because they want to have big, loud and fast cars. Furthermore there are still a lot of households which use fossil fuels like oil, coal or gas for heating.

ü Thank you Mr. Miller. What about you Mr. Frey. What is your opinion concerning global warming? Do you think the same as Mr. Miller does? (better: Do you think in the same line as Mr Miller does?)

û Partly, yes. I think that a lot of people, especially the older ones, do not now how harmful burning oil, coal or gas is. There should be more information days(??) for these people.

ü You think that people should use more alternative sources of energy?

û Yes, of course.

ü However, you now that often it is a very high investment to adapt old heating installations or buy completely now ones.

û Yes, I know. However, it is a long-term investment because when you use alternative sources of energy you save a lot of money though it is true that the first investment can be very severe indeed. I think that the States (better: U.S. or United States) have to offer financial support. For example, every household, which does not use fossil fuels for heating, should get some extra money every month or something similar.

ü What can advocate groups do to stop or slow down global warming?

û The only way we can help is to inform the people and tell them about the long-term consequences.

ü So what are the long-term consequences?

û (You can't say "...consequences are that ....", so better use something like: ) Global Warming will eventually lead to environmental disasters becoming more frequent and stronger than in the last years.
Storms, blazes, hurricanes and floods will come more quickly.
There are also after effects like the rise of the sea level and as a consequence large parts of costal Bangladesh or Florida will be swallowed(??).

ü That sounds horrible. Furthermore I heard that our climate will change. What would be different compared to our current climate and why would this change happen?

û Normally our oceans are warm and the Golf stream influences the European weather with its warm water so we have a mild climate in Europe. Because of global warming our atmospheric temperature is rising and as a consequence of this rise the poles are melting, thus cooling the oceans. Therefore the Golf stream brings cold water to north Europe and the weather will change. It will get colder.

ü Thank you for this interesting interview, Mr Frey and Mr. Miller. Good-bye.

ü Good-bye, Mrs X.

J Good afternoon, Mrs X.
