Development of the IR
By the end of 17-th century there was in England an agrarian society which changed during the industrial revolution to the industrial society.
Spectacular industrial changes appeared first inthe textile production.
Series of inventions provided for an immense increase of the production. John Kays "flying shuttle" (flying little weaver's ship) in 1733 accelerated the costly spinning procedure.
James Hargreaves developed in 1764 an other spinning machine which he named after his daughter " Spinning Jenny ". With that invention the same possibilities presented themselves for the spinning procedure. In 1769 followed James Arkwrights with the waterframe and in 1779 Samuel Cromptons "Mule" for the fine spinning mill. Both were applicated in textile production according to factory with horse strength, water power or steam power. In 1785 Edward Cartwright invented the mechanical weaving machine , the precursor of the web machine. As a result, the factories concentrated themselves on the textil manufactoring.
Before the industrial revolution the human and animalpower as well as the raw material wood were the main energy sources. Because the wood became increasingly brief, one used from then on coal and coke. In 1766 the arch smelting with coal had become a normal procedure. Possibly at the same time it came to the key invention of the industrial revolution. James Watt improved a earlier modell of Thomas Newcomen and created the steam machine. This steam machine was used within short time to the most important machine and in the most different areas. In the Bergbau (nicht im Wörterbuch) to the drainage of the deep shafts and as a train - and drive engine in the iron trade.
About 20 years later new methods became the iron - and steel production tried out. In the end, it was Henry Cort with his Puddelverfahren (nicht im Wörterbuch) who provided for an improvement of the production procedures and became thereby famous.
The foundation-stone was laid. On the one hand the combination of the steam machines and the machines brought in the textile branch the spinning machine with steam drive proved in 1785. On the other side this prime mover provided together with the Puddelverfahren for the production of the steam locomotive in 1814.
George Stephenson was an Englisch mechanical engineer who dsigned the famous and historically important steam lokomotive named Rocket and is known as the “Father of Railways”. In 1825 the first public railway was opened between Stockton and Darlington. In 1850 there were already 10.000 km of railroad lines in England. The railway carried passengers and goods in the whole country. As another triumph of the Machine Age was that the application of steam machines used in ships. In 1833 the Canadian steamboat crossed for the first time the Atlantic. |
