Danke schonmal.

In the novel “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines is about a young boy named Jefferson who is sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins´ aunt and Jefferson´s godmother want from Grant that he visits Jefferson in jail and teachs him about pride and dignity. Grant is a major character. He is a young man with a dark skin color. He is an African American. Gant wear different clothes in the novel. In Chapter two, for example, he wears a wool shirt under his jacket. Grant´s parents live in California. But he was raised by his Aunt Lou and crew up on a former plantation in Louisiana. He went to university and is now a teacher. Grant teachs in a church six months out of the year. His students are from six years old to thirteen or fourteen. Grant hates teaching and punish his students. He “caught one of the students trying to figure out a simple multiplication problem on his fingers, and I slashed him hard across the butt with the Westcott ruler”. Grant drives a gray ´46 Ford.

Grant is in love with Vivian Baptiste and loves her very much and wants to marry her one day. He wants to run away with her and begin a new, better life. But Vivian can´t come with him, because of her children and his husband. She is separate from him, but not divorce. With other persons Grant understands well, too. Grant is educate and intelligent. He could never stay angry long over anything. He could never believe in anything for very long. Grant don´t believe in God and don´t like Sundays. In his opinion they are sad. He feels humiliated of whites, because blacks are suppressed. For example, blacks are allowed to use only the back door in Henri Pichot´s house.
Grant changes during the novel.
At the beginning of the novel Grant is egoistic. He don´t want to help Miss Emma with Jefferson. All irritates Grant and he is in a bad mood because of the thing with Jefferson. He is common to his students. But while he visits Jefferson he learns to care for other people and isn´t so angry as at the beginning. He gets kinder. Grant and Jefferson become friends.
