The Elizabethan Age was the Age of Renaissance, but the Elizabethans where much closer to a medieval way of thinking than to our modern world picture.
They had the idea of "The Great Chain of Being", which ment that all that exists is in a created order, from the lowest possible grade to perfection, God Himself. This God-given order must be saved at all costs. Human beings may not destroy this order nor rebel against it. According to the Great Chain of Being, God is on top of everything, watching all from above, followed by the angels and the nature. The next step of the hierarchy were the humans , but still a king was worth more than a farmer. After the humans came the animals but an ox was worth more than a cat. Then came plants and trees and on the bottom were all the lifeless things.
So as you can see , everything on earth had its valency , this was god-given and may not be interrupted. The ladder of hierarchy was controlled by the nature and established order and harmony. The main principle of the Chain of Being was: "Only God gives the laws , he controls everything and he gives everything the right way!".
Next to the idea of the Great Chain of Being there was another way of thinking. The Elizabethans also believed in a geo-centric universe, in which the erath is sorrounded by spheres. |
