Thanks for the info MI, I thought LATEX was only working in the Maths/ Physics/ Chemistry fora (or should I say forums Augenzwinkern ?).

As for the splitting up or not: I agree with sqrt(2) in the sense that I do not mind either way .
Lastly: I suspect you won't be coming across SL theory unless you choose to pursue a rather mathematical degree at university ( and by that I mean Maths or Physics ).

@sqrt(2):
Well, I do not know the book you speak of - my reference textbook is "Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering" by Riley, Hobson & Bence. However, if as you said your book contains a chapter about SL theory it might deal with some further aspects of SL theory. It all depends on how advanced and/or how applied the textbook is.
In any case, SL theory is not all that revolutionary - it appears to be just another method of dealing with differential equations.
I find e.g. Green's function to be much more interesting (or should I say cunning ?) .

Which is exactly what I want to do (physics to be precise) Augenzwinkern .

So well, we'll leave the topic here, for instance. It actually doesn't REALLY matter, you are right with that.
And this is the point, where I leave your discussion as active writer Augenzwinkern .

Well, it's not really a "pure mathematics" book as it's discussing applications of DEs as well (just as the title suggests), then again it's no "engineering mathematics" book either, still giving comprehensive derivations. I think you can get a lot of the style it's written in from the few pages you can look into at Amazon.

It became particulary interesting to me when you mentioned their relation to Fourier Series, the latter interesting me because I'm somewhat into sound engineering, and -- having a rather theoretical disposition, I guess -- being curious about the mathematical background.

Just another thing I haven't heard of until now... I only know Green from his theorem in vector calculus. I'm glad I still have a few years to study all that stuff.

I had a look at the index of the book you mentioned and it seems to be about as extensive as the book I have which is a bit more than I currently know (or am supposed to know for the exam anyway).
Despite the fact that RHB (Riley Hobson and Bence) has "Engineering" in its title it is actually fairly detailed in its derivations, though they are sometimes terse on the more obvious part and it can take a while to properly understand a chapter.

I only mentioned Green's function ( a method for solving Second order inhomogeneous ODEs) because it is a fairly clever application of the delta function which I appreciate. It is also one of the topics I understand best (which puts it into rather stark contrast with some of the Matrix stuff that we did)

You said "delta function"... You're lucky my calculus tutor doesn't know you. smile

I'm not really into the theory of distibutions (heck, I don't even really know what a distribution is), I only know the Dirac pulse because it makes things really easy if its folded with another signal oder Fourier transformed, both finding very important applications in digital signal processing.

I did indeed say function and with good reason: the delta function can be considered to be part of the set of "generalized functions" (this is an actual mathematical definition) such as H(x) (the step function) which has
H(x<1) = 1 & H(x<0) = 0.

I am sure your tutor has good reason to chastize you for calling it a function but it is a function in the generalized sense. One can also define its Fourier Transform and get a useful identity out of it, though again one must be careful how one uses it .

Yes, I agree the delta function is a very useful concept and this is part of the reason I appreciate it - things like the "point sources" which are ubiquitous in Physics question sheets can be neatly described by such functions (or products thereof).

You said something about folding signals: do you mean convolution ? Or correlation ?

Convolution h of two functions f&g :

if

Correlation:

if

Or is this something completely different ?

I was talking about convolution, sorry. The point is that you can simulate the acoustics of a room, an electronic circuit or whatever by calculating the convolution of the so-called impulse response (which is the output of the circuit if you feed it the Dirac pulse or the sound reflected by the walls of the room you want to simulate when creating a Dirac pulse sound, approximated for example by a pistol shot) and the signal you want to process. This doesn't rely on any external hardware as a plate reverberator and under certain circumstances also can be done in real-time. Quite a powerful tool, if you ask me.

HI tobi and sabi.

its great that you two are here...

bavarian and problems speaking english...i can understand it.

The best opportunity to improve your english is always to go abroad and spend some time there.

if this is not possible ( i understand the finanical problem ) its good to listen to english radio and watch movies in the original language which isnt so hard to day as every DVD has an english part, too.

I started using the web radio for my fav radio programme from brighton. its fun to listen to it cos I heard that funny accent again.

Otherwise I would say: read magazines and books in english.

If you two generelly have questions about something, dont hesitate to ask one of the admins ....

and dont feel embarrased about making mistakes cos its NATURAL!!!

Hi,

My name is Grigory, I am studying physics at Cornell University in US. English is not my native language, but I seem to have learned it a little bit over these 6 years in USA, so from time to time I may be of some assistance with questions related to English.
On my side, since I am trying to learn German, I hope to benefit from your discussions in German.

Thank you,
Grigory.

Hi,

my name is Marcel I am 17 years old and I have been studying English for 6 years I guess. Reading books is one of my favourite hobbys and it helps avoiding stupid mistakes.
I know that my English is not the best but it is not the worst either.
You would make me very happy by correcting my mistakes.

@Zombye:
I am in class 11 and English is one of my "Leistungskurse". I would like to know if it is hard to study in America or England because I want to study "Neurowissenschaften" or "Biochemie" in England or America.

Hey,
I'm new here but I think some of you know me from 'matheboard'.

I'm still a pupil at a grammar school in Munich and also in the first year of 'G8'.
English is one of my favorite languages and subjects at school. Exept from english I can speak german (what a surprise!), spanish, vietnamese and latin, even you don't speak latin anymore.
And I've got to say: I hate latin. It doesn't make any sense to me of learnig it because you dont speak it anymore!

Well sometimes you've got to make sacrifices, so I only chose it to learn spanish.

After grammar school I want to study business law in the USA.

I love to read books, besides thriller and horror books, and also in english. In fact half of the books in my bookshelves are in english...
I also like meeting ma friends at a café or somewhere else.
I used to do Karate but quit doing it two years ago. Now I don't do any sport anymore exept of walking or cycling to school and Tanzen at some partys Augenzwinkern

ähm...if you find any mistakes in the text above, please correct them/me.
thanks a million!

Oh I see, I've written a lot... but I love talking about myself Big Laugh

Greets,
chocolate

Willkommen to you.

Of course I know you from MatheBoard - I at least find the time to follow the Off-Topic-Discussion as you well know Augenzwinkern .

@Latin:
I don't think Latin is stupid, in the contrary, it is a really interesting language and it teaches a lot! You learn a lot about grammar, as Latin is the language with the most complex grammar structure I know of (which means they don't need a sentence structure like English) and if you can translate this language and speak one of the Romance languages (e.g. French), it'll be no problem to learn the others. Of course, there are other languages that might be more important, like Chinese or Arabic, but as a basis for Indoeuropean languages, it is of highest importance. You'll notice once you started learning Spanish. Just have a look at the conjugation of "ser", one of the Spanish "sein" (do you learn Spanish already?).

Greetings
MI

PS: There is a mistake: It should be "except for sth.", but I make a lot of mistakes myself, so this is just a tiny one Augenzwinkern .

well you're right about the grammar structure. And what you're saying is the same thing my sister says about latin. but I think you can only like latin if you're good in/at? it. or if you can the grammar in latin you will like latin at all.
And latin is the only language of my 4 languages where I'm really bad.
the only thing I like in my lessons is the history about the Romans.

sí hablo espanol. pero: Latin is not soooo useful 'cause it would be easier if I had learned French.

and I think you speak spanish? any other languages?

greetings,
chocolate

I speak hardly any Spanish, never had it at school, just taught myself some bits of it. I only speak English and French rather fluently. And when I began to learn Spanish, I saw that nearly everything could be derived from either Latin or French.
However, I interrupted learning Spanish at the moment, because I cannot find much time and I have to start learning for my DALF exam in July...

But some day, I want to learn Chinese...

If your oral exams and research topics are in english you might consider putting more effort in properly learning this language! siginig up for this board is a good first step but it won't do much good until you start working systematically! my advice: grab an english book and start reading or even better start reading english newspapers and write out all the words you dont know smile it is fairly difficult in the beginnin but if you keep working it gets easier and less frustrating smile

good luck!

My name is Steve; nickname Szte (don't ask me why, for I don't know it myself). I'm 16 years old, and I have my origins in sweden? <-don't really know if that sentence is right or makes sense, though! I'm living near Berlin and came here to this board from the matheboards - I'm no good with maths but I'm not too bad at it, either!

I still attend school and am in my 3rd year of middle school --
also I think I'll pass the MSA easily with flying grades, since it is, in my opinion, a real JOKE...
So, starting in septembre I'll be a 1st-year-highschool-student =)

and yeah, I'm here to kill some time when I got nothing to do..
If there are still questions about me, ask me anything, anytime!

Kind regards,
