oh! you already call it THE book, nice to hear! hihi!
yeah, it's ouf of THE book, called "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy"! the babelfish is small, yellow, leechlike and probably the oddest thing in the universe! *g*
you can stick it into your ear, and there it feeds on your brain waves (also very unenglish! ) and it translates everything you are listening to in your language!! so, it's a very smart, lovely fishly, like me! hihi! smile

also nice to hear is that you already use some hessisch words like "gelle" and "wurscht" but better would be "worscht" smile my influence influences you more and more!!! hihihi... smile

Hi everyone!
so at last I'm introducing myself, having shirked of doing it for over a month now... Augenzwinkern
My name is Leah, that's a bit unusual because that name is 'usually' written without an h at the end...can't help it, though.
Since my birth I've been living in a small village near Ingolstadt which is in Bavaria.
My hobbies are dancing, Taekwondo (that's a type of martial arts), reading and having fun with my friends and my boyfriend. I also play the piano, but lately I don't have too much time for that with my pile of homework growing bigger everyday smile
I love the english language very much and I'm actually thinking of taking the english Leistungskurs as I am in eleventh grade now.
I also love reading english books and watching english films, sometimes more than german ones. Especially books are very much fun to read in english.
OK now I've said Hi to everyone here! Looks like it's going to be be fun!

Hi ya.

Im Katharina and I come from Berlin.
I have lived in Brighton / Uk for a year and studied there in year 12. Was a great experience and since then Im a really big fan of the UK and I love to go back as often as possible.
I have found lots of friends over there and I still enjoy the emails and the chats through ICQ with them.
Right now Im doing my A-level and i will write my exams at the end of January. After that I might have a look more often to this side to help people with questions...

so if you need to know something about the UK or how to manage an advanced course in English, just ask me.

Hey folks...

just noticed that after all this time ... I still did not introduce myself properly. So I better do that now, huh?

Name is Christina - as you might have guessed already looking at my nick. Chose my real name for a board - just for a change you know...!
I'm studying to be a teacher at Secondary Schools. One of my subjects is English. Actually I've alreaday got some teaching experience and am about to leave college behind finally. Pretty stressed with my final thesis and the rest of my final exams this year... *sucks* Altough so far the worst about the exams is this bureaucratic bullsh**t that has to be completed in advance. Klo

Now..besides studying the language I love so dearly: I've lived in California for a few months - but that was a lifetime ago *lol* 7 years have passed eversince then. Well...and I've spent quite an amount of time in Ireland where I'm vanishing to for a couple of days about every 8 weeks by now after having lived there for a quater of a year. I'm planning to leave for a year after my exams...and then we'll see if destiny wants me to come back again at all Augenzwinkern There are a couple of reasons that make me think I might stay....

But that should be enough now about my private life...revealed enough for you to know me I suppose

I´m Kris(tin), 18 years old and I live in a small town somewhere in Lower Saxony.
I searched for something like this board, because I joint the Englisch A-Level (which was one of the most bad decisions I´ve ever made, but that´s another story). I think you´re a quite cool community here and I hoße that I´ll have lots of fun and of course some good discussions about english stuff =)

I think there´s nothing really important to say about me...but if yu want to know somethink - ask ;-)

Do you mind me asking why attending an English a-level course is one of the most bad decisions you have made?!
I am still attending the last half a year of an english a-level course and I have enjoyed the 1 1/2 years so far but I think my situation is different to you because I would have been stupid not to take English after having lived in Great Britain for a year.

Well, I haven't introduced myself here (yet), though I have tried (Browser f**** up ) .

I'm Alex, and I am currently studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge .

I'm from Hamburg, where I went to school until my "mittlere Reife" after which I went to school in England. I applied to Cambridge and am now in my 2nd term. 'nuff said .

As for your question, Kathi: What kind of "insider info" are you looking for ?
Locations ? Whether or not to do it ? Length ? Price ? Give us a hand, will you Big Laugh ?

PS: "... where I do live till now". It should probably be "... where I have lived until now" because you are referring to something that 'started and is still ongoing" . In any case you should remove "do" because it is a strong emphasis which I assume you did not mean.

And... wow.. that was your only real 'mistake ' - well done ! (If this sounds patronizing, consider what has been written all over this board).

So long,

ACH

Yeah,
I thought you could give me information about (dis-)advantages concerning the length and the country...
or perhaps someone of you knows, where possibilities are given to get a [Stipendium](what's the english word for that?), because probably it's very expensive.

thanks, cya

As for the length, please cf. this other thread, too. However, in general it is better to stay for a year rather than half a year or a term, because one has just started to get to grip with life after one single term - so the subsequent terms would be much more enjoyable.

You ask about the country - I only know about Britain, so here goes:

pros:
- it's close, and you can get to/from it fairly cheaply (Ryanair !)
- the school system there is quite well developed (I can only speak about private schools, though)
- the uni's are really good if you choose to go to uni there (like I did Big Laugh ) .
- the accent they teach you at school, and which appears to be widely taught, is the British southwestern one, so you should find yourself fairly at home with the pronounciation and stuff.
-

cons:
- the food is on average worse than I found in Germany but that might just be me
- The culture is quite similar to continental Europe, so it is not a big "adventure" as would be, for example, New Zealand (chosen at random )
- You WILL have to put up with the fact that the only thing the English know about German history is the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich [sic!] and that can get annoying at times.

Well, this was just a "brainstormed" list so I might have missed something crucial (hopefully not !)

Regards,

ACH

PS: Just remembered you asked about bursaries (=Stipendia) : I personally do not know of any bursaries available from the German side of things.
The European Union might have something, but I doubt it. The only other possbility is the school itself, but you'll probably find that they are not overly keen on giving out money even to good students (that is, the money they give for bursaries is symbolic compared to the amount the ask for fees) .

Hi =)

@Ukkat: Of course you´re allowed to ask why... ;-)
Well, actually I like English very, very much and it has been my favourite (and best) subject at school and so it I was in a way supposed to enter the A-Level. But the teacher means a real nightmare to me...he doesn´t like my way to write, my way to dwell on things and so on...and that makes me sad, because I lost everything that connects me with this subject, there´s no fun any way...and what also strikes me is, that I seemingly lost my self-consciousness for this subject, actually I was able to write lots of pages with good english and now I feel like I do everything wrong =(

Yeah, that´s the situation now and so I decided to write my "Facharbeit" in English to show that I´m able to speak and to write this language...

I can imagine in what kind of situation you are right now because I had the choice between America and the UK, too..
But actually I wouldnt really search for big cons and pros because it really is different depending on the place you will be living at.

For example I used to live in Brighton for a year which is a coastal city, just 1 1/2 hours drive from London away and about 250000 people live there.
For me it was a change cos Im used to a big city.....
But I enjoyed the life there very much because I have never lived in a city so close to the sea and now I was attending a public school which I didnt experience before.

On the other side you can also end up in the last town on the edge of nowhere in the Uk and thats why I think that you can not really say one country is better than the other.

In the end I choose Great Britain because my agency told me that I would have the choice to which place I want to go and that was much better than ending up somewhere in the USA.

I feel sorry for you that the teacher practically damaged your interest in English.
But because you have chosen the subject and you cannot really redecide you have to adjust yourself to the teacher and try and start to handle the situation.

My english teacher is my tutor and he is really great.
But the disadvantage about him is that he doesnt like long texts at all and although my exam is always one of the three best he always tells me not to write so much but I know that I need a few more words to write the stuff he wants to hear....
