In the end I resigned to the fact that I need to sell my car. Nein, ich bin der Meinung, dass du "resign" so nicht gut benutzen kannst. Vielleicht kurz und bündig einfach "I resigned to sell my car" - ändert aber ganz leicht den Sinn.

When we moved we got the chance to throw away all the old newspapers that we had been collected. Ja, verändert aber den Satz etwas. Vielleicht eher mit "we got rid of" (wir haben uns ... entledigt)

Mary went on teaching only on a part-time basis when she got her first child.
6. Susanne is immensely proud of her twins.
Susanne prides herself with her twins. So, wie du es geschrieben hast, geht es mEn nicht.

Hier kann meiner Meinung nach eigentlich nur "by himself" passen. "On his own" wäre natürlich auch korrekt, passt aber wegen des "by" nicht in den Satz. |

Ah, demnach war die Vorlage vermutlich nur "Wanting to be by".
Mit "by himself" kann ich natürlich wunderbar leben - da bin ich zufrieden, dass ich mich nicht getäuscht habe, dass das "by" in der Konstruktion mit "his own" falsch sein sollte.
