Zitat:
A
Travelers, young and old, international and American, families and singles, are eager to "Discover America," from the coasts to the heart of our country, from the mountains to the seashores, to enjoy the friendliness and diversity of rural America. There are a variety of activities and means of transportation for touring the countryside--by plane, train, car, and boat, or driving via the scenic highways in a recreational vehicle. In addition, the types and variety of accommodations in rural America differ considerably from opportunities to camp, to luxurious cabins, or other types of accommodations.
B
The recreation vehicle (RV) is a nickname for a whole family of recreation vehicles that combine transportation and temporary living quarters for recreation, camping, and travel. Some provide a simple place for sleeping and eating, while others are virtually luxury lodges on wheels--equipped with conveniences ranging from running water and complete bathroom facilities, to a power source for refrigerators, microwaves, and airconditioning.
C
The travel and tourism industry recognizes RV tourists and campers as an important niche/sector in the tourism industry. According to David J. Humphreys, president of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, there are about 9 million RVs in the United States that are privately owned and about 25 million people who regularly use them. According to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Administration's (USTTA) annual "In-Flight Survey" of International Air Travelers, between January-December 1992, 3.7 percent of 12,809 international visitor respondents surveyed reported that they traveled by RV.
D
More and more international visitors are opting for renting the RV, thus enabling them to enjoy America at their own pace. Many routes and destinations are available to accommodate RVers and campers by offering theme itineraries linking historical, cultural, and natural attractions. This, in turn, is causing an economic multiplier effect on a diversity of travel industry sectors. The conscientious integration of recreation and its byproducts, such as recreational vehicular travel, campgrounds, bicycling, boating, and hiking, are examples of tourism activities that are a major part of sustainable niche tourism. The income generated by rural tourism and the byproducts, however modest, can revitalize communities, encourage further economic investment, and continue to promote the wonderland of America.

E
There are travelers who are looking for an enjoyable, healthy, and economical way to see and experience the small towns and farmlands, forests and rivers in America, and RVing is an excellent travel option that is becoming more and more popular. According to the National Park Service, the number of people staying in tents, RVs, or camping in the back country in national parks rose to 10.2 million in 1991, from 9.5 million in 1987. Thousands of counties and flourishing villages across the nation are beginning to realize that the development potential tourism offers is attainable through marketing of their communities, both domestically and internationally, to such tourists as RVers, as well as the traditional campers.
F
The recreation vehicle has become an outstanding means of seeing opportunities for leisure travel in America, as well as having a positive impact on the tourism industry. The average Rver spends more than $ 100 a day on related goods and services that include meals, campground accommodations, souvenirs, theme parks, and endless scenic attraction. This makes RV travelers extremly desirable to any community.
G
Discovering America by means of an RV offers the traveler the convenient adventures of outdoor life, such as camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and biking. Camping is one of America's favorite outdoor pastimes. The outdoor options that camping presents are endless. There are 4,982 public campgrounds and 8,579 private campgrounds, with the majority located in the rural parts of the United States.
H
Camping is not just meant for the young. RV camping and touring is a favorite activity for the early retired and, to the contrary, anyone who is young at heart. For adults traveling with children in 1992, camping was the third most popular holiday according to research by the U.S. Travel Data Center and Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. Nearly half of the nation's 8.5 million RVs are owned by Americans aged 55 and older. The progression from tent camping to RV camping as campers grow older is evident. Tenters today are the RVers of tomorrow. Also, the flexibility and economics associated with RV travel encourage greater RV users and families on a fixed budget. A study done by Pannell-Kerr-Forster found that RV vacations are considerably more economical than traditional trips by car, bus, train, or airplane, regardless of trip destination or duration. An RV vacation costs from half to three-quarters less than comparable vacations by any other mode.
