In the novel “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines is about a young boy named Jefferson who is sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins´ aunt and Jefferson´s godmother want Grant to visit Jefferson in jail and teach him about pride and dignity. Grant is a major character. He is a young man with dark skin color. He is an African American. Gant wears different clothes in the novel. In Chapter two, for example, he wears a woollen shirt under his jacket. Grant´s parents live in California. But he was raised by his aunt Lou and grew up on a former plantation in Louisiana. He went to university and is now a teacher. Grant teaches in a church for six months during the year. His students are between six years and o thirteen or fourteen years old.. Grant hates teaching and punishes his students. He “caught one of the students trying to figure out a simple multiplication problem on his fingers, and I slashed him hard across the butt with the Westcott ruler”. Grant drives a gray ´46 Ford.

Grant is in love with Vivian Baptiste and loves her very much and wants to marry her one day. He wants to run away with her and begin a new, better life. But Vivian can´t come with him, because of her children and her husband. She is separated from him, but not divorced. Grant gets along well with other people, too. Grant is well-educated and intelligent. He could never stay angry long with anything. He could never believe in anything for very long. Grant doesn´t believe in God and doesn´t like Sundays. In his opinion they are sad. He feels humiliated by whites, because blacks are suppressed. For example, blacks are allowed to use only the back door in Henri Pichot´s house.
Grant changes during the novel.
At the beginning of the novel Grant is egoistic. He doesn´t want to help Miss Emma with Jefferson. Everything irritates Grant and he is in a bad mood because of the matter with Jefferson. He is mean towards his students. But while he visits Jefferson he learns to care for other people and isn´t as angry as at the beginning. He gets kinder. Grant and Jefferson become friends.

Danke schonmal.
