The administration of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scottland is in London.
The government of the U.K. is responsible for the political, enonomical and legal matters (for example crime, police, international relations, tax and elections) but why?
In 1921 Ireland was split up into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland caused by the development of the history in the 12th century.
The Republic of Ireland is Catholic and an independent state
Northern Ireland is mostly Protestant and politically depend on the administration of the United Kingdom.
In the 12th century, the English Army conquered and defeated Ireland for devensive and economic reasons.
After many revolts against the conquerer, Henry 8th entitled himself as King of Ireland.
Henry broke away from the Catholic Church and established Protestantism in England and he wanted it in Ireland, too.
However, the uprisings were bloodily suppressed by the conquerer because most of people in Ireland were still Catholics and they had to pray secretly.
That´s why England started the colonisation of Ulster by Protestant settlers from England and Scotland. They were about 100.000 settlers.
The settlers had a lot of advantages. They dispossessed the Irish Catholizent to land and Irishmen who still possessed land were punished by death penalty or slavery.
600.000 Catholics died after many revolts in Ireland until 1653.
Until 1845 one million people especially catholics died of starvasion or persecution and almost one million Catholics emigrated to the U.S.A.
The troubles continued until World War One.
Meanwhile England had to fight against Germany, the Easter Rising took place but failed.
Easter Rising:
The question of home rule came up which would mean more politically power to the Irish government and many public – and underground organisations were founded by the Nationalists and Unionists(one of the most important public organisation is the IRA, founded by Nationalists and forbidden by Unionists in 1922). Unionists, who are mostly Protestants and against the reuinion. Nationalists, who are mostly Catholics want the reunion. To this end, the Nationalists formed the Sinn Fein party, which means „we ourselves“, and imported arms from Germany. Members of the Sinn Fein party attacked and occupied a post office and announced an independent government of Ireland at easter. It is called „The Easter Rising“.
However, the head - members of the Sinn Fein party were executed by english soldiers and Ireland was split up into Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (Ulster) in 1921.
The division in the north was the start for the troubles in Ireland. The Catholic minority were discriminated against elections, jobs and education for a long time by the Protestant majority. Firstly, The minority demonstrated friendly against the discriminatory. As a result, the english government stationed special forces for ending the demonstrations in Northern Ireland. The special forces were considered occupying forces and the IRA had their comeback one year later. In the following years, demonstrations were often bloodily suppressed by the special forces. The climax was the „Bloody Sunday“ on 30th January 1972. During a demonstration, 14 unarmed Catholic protesters were seriously injured and 13 unarmed Catholic protesters were killed by the special forces. The Catholic protesters demonstrated against a law. It were able for the soldiers and special forces of England to arrest Catholic protestants without a court process.
There were two versions. The Catholics said that the soldiers and special forces had shot indiscriminately. The troops of England said that they shot back only. (25 years later, a lawyer found out that the troops of England had shot without reasons.) The uprisings continued a long time. The conflict ended for the most people in Northern Ireland with the „Belfast Agreement“ on 10. April 1998.
