| Meine Frage: Hallo zusammen, ich bräuchte einmal Hilfe bei der Inhaltsangabe von Somerset Maughams short story "The Force of circumstances" Meine Ideen: In Somerset Maugham's short story ?The Force Of Circumstances? the relationship of a young couple living on a lonely British outpost in Malaysa breaks up since the newly-wed husband has gone native before. Guy, the administrator of a British outpost in Malaysa, is married to a young woman named Doris, who he got to know when he visited his home country. Their apparently happy, easy-going relationship is disturbed by the appearance of a Malay woman whose exotic beauty Doris at first admires. Guy, however, is deeply troubled by the woman's presence and finally confesses to his wife that he lived with the Malay woman for ten years and is the father of her three children. He justifies his behaviour by emphasizing his extreme loneliness on the outpost. Although Doris is understanding and wants to forgive Guy, she cannot tolerate the idea that her white husband had an intimate relationship with a black woman. Doris moves out of their bedroom, but outwardly they continue their common daily routines so that Guy begins to hope for an agreement. After six months of painful self-questioning Doris finally decides to leave Guy for good and returns to England. Immediately after her departure, Guy allows his black family to move back in with him. |
