San Francisco
San Francisco is a big city in California and the 12th populous city in the United States. It is located in the west of the United States and has a Population of about 8 Million peoples. San Francisco is a city with a big cultural identity. Its residential architecture is a good example for that. The city has also a close relationship with the unique landscape. Only against long odds and much resistance new architecture has made its way slowly into the city.
The gold Rush began in 1849 a plunge of it was in the late 1870s. But the city grow always steadily and nowadays is it a important financial center.
The city has a tumultuous history of cultural movements, social unrest, and natural disasters.
1906 was a big earth quake hit the city, it was estimated 8.3 on the Richter Scale. The earth quake caused many fires and they devastate the whole city. After a decade of frantic rebuilding and a short revival of the city the Great Depression started.
But the city solved the problem clever. It is called Deficit spending and it means that the city borrows money to invest it. That creates workplaces and so the people are able to buy something. For example such projects were the Bay Bridge or the Golden gate bridge. They are still remain landmarks of the city today.
In the 1960s the city was place of the hippy movement. In San Francisco was also a big gay community. That was not only because of the high per cent age of gays. They people there were only willing to fight for their rights.
1989 was another earth quake, and 1991 the Oakland firestorm hits the city. And so in the last decade of the millennium was another urban renewal. |
