Inzwischen hab´ ich zu meiner Erleichterung festgestellt, daß es keine Schande ist, diesen ominösen Paul Hentzer nicht zu kennen - Wikipedia kennt ihn nämlich auch nicht.

Über Google hab´ ich dann ´rausgekriegt, daß Hentzer ein deutscher "Tourist" war, der 1598 England bereiste und die dortigen Sitten und Gebräuche erkundete; er stellte z.B. fest, daß die Engländer mehr Fleisch aßen als die Franzosen, dafür die Franzosen aber mehr Brot.
Aus dieser Sparte stammt dann wohl auch die Geschichte vom Tabakrauchen.

Hi bedanke mich schonmal. Das war eine Aufgabe aus dem Buch discovering shakespeare, in dem ein deutscher Besucher von den Unterhaltungsmedien in England bericht. WAr so 15tes -16tes Jahrhundert.

1.a The performances in those theatres are very good because the artists show many different programmes. They present comedies, tragedies and a variety of dances accompanied by excellent music.

1.b Paul Hentzer said about the theatre audiences that they smoke a nicotin weed called Tobaca with pipes. There they puff the smoke with much phlegm out through their nostrils.

1.c Bear baiting is an entertainment where dogs fight bears and bulls (???). But the bears have a big handicap because they wear chains. Another entertainment is one where five or six men with whips stand in a circle around the bear and whip him.

2. I think games where animals fight for their lives are very interesting. Also in rings animals battle against each other and humans vs humans too. The spectators adore them like stars.

3. An entertainment which has many similarities is the bullfight. The bullfighters must hit the bull with a great throw (???) so that he has a quick death. Another entertainment are illegal dogfights where two dogs fight against each other to death. The spectators may bet money on the dog who has the better chance to win.

(eine ziemlich idiotische Geschichte; wann und wo soll das denn alles stattgefunden haben? Und von diesem Hentzer hab´ ich noch nie etwas gehört)
