How the United States` Presidential Election works The United States holds a presidential election every four years. While only American citizens get to vote, the outcome has global influence. Today I’m going to explain how U.S presidential elections works. The US presidential election system is quite complicated. Primary Election A presidential election is divided into two stages – the primary election and the general election. First of all, during the summer before the presidential election, the two major parties Republicans and Democrats decide who their candidate is going to be. People in the same party compete against each other in these elections. These elections are called primaries and caucuses. The candidate from each party who gets the most votes wins that party’s nomination and will compete in the general election. Once the candidates have won their party’s nomination they organize and run huge campaigns. And it must be said that those Presidential campaigns are very expensive. They are paid for by private donations and a limited amount of public funds. This year Romney and Obama spent 2.5 billion dollars combined. General Election The general election campaign begins in late summer, when each party holds its convention and formally nominates the candidates for president and vice president. Then the winning candidate from each party names a vice presidential running mate. President Obama named Joe Biden while Mitt Romney chose Paul Ryan. For the next two months, the candidates travel around the country and explain to voters – in speeches, radio, television ads, and online – why they should be elected. And there are also held TV-Debates in which the candidates discuss face-to-face on issues and make promises. As you can see here these are the results of this years’ election. Some states tend to favor one party over the other. ‘’Red’’ states tend to vote for Republicans meanwhile ‘’Blue’’ states more for Democrats. In ‘’Swing States’’ like Florida, Ohio or Pennsylvania there is no clear majority. Those states can be decisive. With 332 votes, Obama won surprisingly clear. There are 538 electoral votes in total, and so a candidate has to win 270 or more votes to be elected. Election Day On Election Day, voters decide who will be the president for the next four years. The date is always on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. The voters have to be US citizens and they have to be at least 18 years old. Voters don’t vote for the president directly. They vote for delegates. These delegates then elect the president. The number of delegates is based on the size of its states’ population. The most populous state, California for example, is 55 electoral votes worth. The least populous state Wyoming, is just 3 electoral votes worth. vielen Dank  |
