Hallo liebe Community,

Dear Sir or Madam,

I decided to apply for a voluntary service in Africa in an educational project because it is the perfect opportunity for me to combine my passion for teaching, my fascination of African culture and my wish to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions in Africa.
Since my parents both work as teachers I came early into contact with discussions and literature onteaching and its psychological background which evoked my interest. When I discovered my talent for explaining in school I soon started to gain work experience on that field by giving private lessons for about 1.5 years to several students and a work placement at a comprehensive school. What makes teaching so fascinating to me is not so much the sheer absorption of information but the development of a person. Acompanying a person while he makes experiences, learns and matures, i.e. building a relation with this person and reacting to his special needs, is at the same time challenging and extremely rewarding to me. The unpredictability of the interaction with other human beings always demands creativity, empathy and spontanity and thus makes teaching so exciting.
My fascination for the culture of Africa cannot be explained by one single connection but the behaviour and the stories of my godfather from Burkina Faso surely influenced me a lot. He grew up in his home country and became a professional djembé player so he was able to build a djembé for me and taught me to play it. His descriptions of the way of making music in his home country and many other aspects of his life as well as his behaviour itself created an exciting image of a lifestyle extremely different from our European one. Experiencing African culture firsthand has therefore been a dream of me since my childhood. Additionally, I am convinced that such a cultural exchange will offer both sides a lot of valuable experiences and will contribute to a better mutual understanding. I am very anxious and excited to learn from this culture, broaden my horizon and offer my own experiences in return.
I chose Experiment e.V. to organise my voluntary service because it had the most professional and reliable appeal. It focusses on cultural exchange and effective and lasting local improvements rather than the touristic aspects of a stay in Africa. Especially living in a host family as a volunteer in contrast to a stay in a hostel was vital to me becuase it enablees me to experience the authentic local everyday life firsthand.

I feel I would be best utilised in a Secondary School because there I could profit the most from my excellent knowledge on school subjects and the taught content itself would be more challenging and thus more interesting for me at a Secondary School. However, I would also cherish the experience of working at a Primary School or giving adult education courses.
I feel able to teach English, Mathematics and Information Technology  to students of any age. My knowledge on those subjects appears sufficient to me due to very good grades in school and accomplishments in several national competitions. Teaching most other subjects might be more appropriate for students of the age of 16 or younger (according to German lesson plans).
Activities I consider to be appropriate for my teaching abilities include assisting a regular teacher, tutoring students during or after school, teaching a class on my own and giving courses on juggling, slacklining or magic tricks (if the required equipment is available or can be crafted). I am of course open for other suggestions and plans. However, I am willing to take as much responsibility as possible; therefore teaching a class on my own appears most attractive to me.
During my previous practiacal experiences I had the chance to gain experience in any activity named above. The strongly varying intellectual levels of the students in my private lessons made me sensitive to the individual needs of students and challenged me to be flexible and to develop down-to-earth approaches in addition to my own rather intellectual one. The work placement enabled me to gain experiences in teaching a class on my own dealing with issues such as authority, coordination with other teachers and responsibility.

Vielen Dank für's Lesen!
