Northern Ireland Conflict

The Northern Ireland Conflict is an identity and power struggle between Catholics and Protestants. In the 16th Century there were many bloody conflicts between the two groups, today it is only a group affiliation.

Reasons for the Conflict:
The Northern Ireland Conflict has a long history. In the 12th Century, Ireland was occupied by England.
All experiments of the Irishmen to stop England failed. When King Henry was the first English king of Ireland, he tried to expand the Protestantism in Ireland. Elizabeth I. played an important role in this. She forced the Catholics to the Anglican Church Constitution, and had to contend with serious riots. Still, most of the Irishmen remained Catholics, even if they had to live out their religion in secret. 1650, the Protestants fought under the command of Oliver Cromwell, and from 1690 under William of Orange. The island was now a Colony of England. During this time, there was often famine among the Catholics and so a lot of them emigrated. The Protestants enjoyed privileges, of which the Catholics were excluded. But with the beginning of the first World War the situation changed. After a bloody battle, the English Parliament was aware that it was no longer possible to keep Ireland as a part of Great Britain. In 1922, a separate Irish State was created. But the Protestants still remained in the majority. But that was not the end of the Irish-English conflict. The Irish National Movement was split between the people who were ready for a compromise and those who were not. The people who were against the compromise failed, but they still fought for the reunification. With the IRA (Irish Republican Army) they tried to force the reunification of Ireland with bomb attacks and murders. It came to discussions of both groups. They found a compromise, which should ensure non-violence and the support of the Peace Contract.

The consequences of this whole dispute between the Catholics and the Protestants were 3600 fatalities in 1.5 million inhabitants of the province.

Because of the many fights and riots between Catholics and Protestants, the live in Ireland today is far away from a normal live. For example, the people are searched for weapons when they enter a shop or a department store. Schools, Kindergartens, Pubs and Sport Clubs are strictly separated in Catholic and Protestant. Taxis are separated in Religion too.

The Northern Ireland Conflict is marked by death and violence. But fortunately the force has declined over the course of time more and more. Today there are only a few fights between the two groups, it is merely a group affiliation.

Meine Ideen:
