Hallo und guten Morgen

LETTER OF MOTIVATION

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my great interest in applying for the XX position within the XX Center listed on XX.

I am 27 years old and have recently graduated from the University of PLACE with a Master’s degree in Geography (specialisation in Human- and Economic Geography) and minor subjects in Political Science, Ethnology and Agricultural Economics. During my studies at the University, my stays abroad and my voluntary work within the Service Civil International (SCI), I was allowed to gain academic knowledge and practical experience in the field of International Cooperation. Amongst others, I worked within several NGOs in the agriculture and rural development sector in different African countries. In 2007, for example, I interned within a local NGO in the field of rural development in Senegal. This internship provided me with a good knowledge of the work of a local NGO. In 2008, I worked as an animator for a youth work camp in a rural area in Madagascar. My responsibilities included the organisation of meetings and events, fund raising and the supervision of the camp on location. For my Master’s Thesis I established the impact of contract faming on the livelihoods of small-scale cotton producers on behalf of the XX Company, a project supported by XX and XX. My research included the design, realisation and analysis of a standardised survey concerning cotton production in different villages in South Eastern Tanzania. My Thesis strengthened my motivation and interest to work in research targeting smallholder farmers for reducing poverty in developing countries.

In order to gain deeper insight in the different fields of International Cooperation, I did after graduation a practical training with XX, an organisation that works in the field of sport and development in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The traineeship included the design, organisation and realisation of a project with street children.

Work experience and extended travels in Africa provided me with good knowledge of regional and local conditions. In addition, I have considerable experience in project management and good quantitative and statistic skills. Concerning my language skills in regards of the JPO position, I speak fluent English and French as well as basic Swahili. I believe that my knowledge and experience would be an asset to the XX Center as a XX(position) and will make me a very competitive candidate for this position.

The XX Position would provide me with the ideal opportunity to assist at your organisation and expand my knowledge, skills and working experience in the field of agricultural sciences in developing countries in which I am planning my PhD degree.

I would be grateful if you consider me for the XX Position as a recommended candidate.

Yours sincerely,
