LEISURE
The amount of spare time at our disposal has increased tremendously over the last few decades. Leisure is so important because it offers us the opportunity to relax. It is a time of recreation after a hard day’s work. We try to be active, to fill our free time with hobbies or pastime that entertain and amuse us.
The problem nowadays is not getting enough spare time but knowing how to use it. For active people there is no difficulty. The can go in for various pastimes, whether they do their gardens, collect stamps, whether they are interested in pottery, photography, riding, hiking, mountaineering or in painting or in some kind of sport. All these pastimes can be very rewarding indeed.
Many people really enjoy their hobbies which they find stimulating and relaxing. Others prefer to be entertained. They watch TV, listen to the radio, go to cinemas, theatres or shows or watch football matches. Doing something different from one’s normal work can also be very interesting. The do-it-yourself movement not only provides satisfactions but also gives you the proud feeling of being able to save a lot of money, and a sense of achievement.
Because of all this we have seen the rise of a leisure industry offering all the equipment or gear we need for our hobbies. Just think of jogging shoes, tennis rackets, walking boots, cameras and video cameras also called camcorders – some of the might already be digital cameras-, stereo equipment, surfboards and skiing equipment. Even the state and the town councils try to cater for our needs by providing various facilities such as sportsfields, sports centres, recreation centres, indoor swimming pools and outdoor swimming pools.
Without the present amount of spare time, mass tourism would be unthinkable. Millions of people go on holiday each year, they book flights, they go abroad to famous holiday resorts either individually or in coach tours. The book safaris or give themselves a treat by booking vacations in a wellness hotel.
Young people prefer to go to youth hostels or holiday camps or they choose low-budget hotels as backpackers. Package tours also called all-in-tours have become quite common; the price includes everything.
Young families prefer self-catering holidays. The rent an apartment, a flat or a flatlet, a mobile home or a fully equipped caravan on a campsite and the prepare their own meals. Daring people take part in expeditions to the Alps, Himalayas, to the deserts in Africa or to the jungles of South-East Asia or South America. Rich people book cruises on luxury cruise ship taking them to various countries around the Mediterranean or to the Caribbean.
In many countries the tourist industry is not booming any longer as it used to a couple of years ago, but it still means good business. An ever increasing percentage of holidaymakers fly to their holiday destinations. On the other hand terrorism deters many people from flying and some airline companies have felt the full impact of this development. Planes are blamed for being the main culprit of air pollution. The time when people take their annual vacations is always a time of long tailbacks or jams which sometimes result in a real chaos on the motorways. Many of the beauty spots all over the world are strewn with litter or waste almost looking like refuse dumps. Ecotourism, an attempt to bring tourism in accord with ecology, tries to solve these problems.
