This summary is about an article taken from the Business Spotlight magazine. It should be a guideline for getting a job interview with a good worded and structured application letter in English. There is no magic formula to write a job application. So the opinions are divided, how to get a job interview. But there are some important criteria, which should always be the same.
The first aim is always to grab the attention of the recruiter, when he reads the first lines. Because there is a high risk, if the application is ordinary written, the recruiter will overflew it and give it in the tray. Three criteria must be reached: it must be clear, it must be relevant and it must be special. Keep the covering or supporting letter short, but it should prompt the recruiter to read the following CV with interest. The curriculum vitae (CV) should be as short as possible, at most two pages. Just mention the highlights of your carrier and try to use power words, such as increase, develop or maximize.
The English application tends to be less personal as the German one. So it is not important if you have children or what the work of your parents is. Be positive and draft it clear, there should remain no open questions. Also very helpful and common in an english application, is to adduce two or three references. Another important point is to use the equivalent German title or education level as in English. And finally request a native speaker of English to check your application.
