War has always an bad affect on the world. People die, people loose their homes and this is only a part of the devastating affects of war. The Vietnam-War claimed many deaths on both sides: on the Vietnam and on the American.
The song deals also with love, because Springsteen’s father fell there in love with a woman from Saigong.
He is also singing that his father came back from the Vietnam-War and when he tried to get a job he wasn’t hired, because of what people would think about the boss hiring a Vietnam vet.
